Product Review: Up&Go Blends

n an ideal world, we should all be making time to sit and enjoy a nutrient dense breakfast of cereals, fruits, yoghurt, eggs, grainy toast, beans etc. But for many people (and for many reasons) this isn’t always happening. So often it is a case of ‘something is better than nothing’. For this reason I wanted to explore a new ‘liquid breakfast option’ by Up&Go, to see how they stack up. The new blend range from Up&Go comes in three varieties:

  • Banana + Cinnamon
  • Mango + Coconut
  • Cocoa + Almond.

For the purpose of this review I sampled the Cocoa + Almond Flavour.

What is in them?
A quick look at the ingredients list quickly showed these breakfast drinks are based on ‘real’ ingredients with a distinct lack of artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. These drinks are a combination of water, whole milk powder, apple juice concentrate for sweetness, oat flour, almonds, cocoa, milk protein concentrate with the addition of an acidity regulator, vegetable fibre, salt, vegetable gum and vitamin C.

How do they stack up nutritionally?
These are low GI (27 if you like numbers) so give a more gradual rise in blood sugar levels, keeping you fuller longer than higher GI drinks. Each 250ml tetra pack has 199 calories (completely appropriate as a meal replacement) with 8.5g of protein, 22g of carbs and 2.6g of fibre. Therefore, nutritionally speaking, they are a little like an egg on a slice of rye toast. There is 15g of sugar in them, but keep in mind this is from lactose and fructose, as well as 8g of fat, which is predominantly unsaturated.

What do they taste like?
I am a big fan of these, they didn’t have an overly processed flavour and the subtle sweetness suited my palate.

What I like about these post weight loss surgery:

  • Convenient
  • Portion controlled
  • Portable
  • Natural
  • A moderate serve of protein and fibre.

 

What to be cautious of
As a back up, these aren’t a bad choice, but they do provide over double the carbohydrate as compared to protein and given they are a liquid they may not keep you as satisfied as a more solid breakfast.

Final thoughts
I wouldn’t suggest these as an ‘everyday’ breakfast, but from time to time, or as something to keep as an ‘emergency back up’ in the work drawer or car, these could make a great option.
